Temperatures in most parts of the UK are set to fall well below freezing.
Snow and ice warnings are in place, ice being the main hazard for drivers.
Any road surfaces that are untreated will have ice forming on them, especially if snow has fallen.
If you encounter snow and ice try to:
Keep your speed balanced, avoid sudden acceleration, sudden braking or sudden changes in direction.
Move away in a higher gear if necessary to avoid wheel spin
Try to use engine braking with the gears rather than using strong foot braking.
Keep your distance from the vehicle in front, remember stopping distances could be as much as 10x
greater in icy conditions.
Only resort to use of the brake if you cannot steer out of trouble.
When descending a hill, reduce your speed before you begin the descent using a low gear to control the vehicles speed.
On an uphill incline select the appropriate gear for the climb at the bottom of the slope to avoid having to change gear during the ascent.
Plan to take a journey on roads that are more likely to have been gritted.
Use dipped headlights until conditions improve.
